Doug was born in Shelby, Michigan to Donald and Phila Barnes. He grew up near Lake Michigan and often boasted of his first job at nine years old picking asparagus. He loved to work on and race cars and motorcycles in his free time. In 1975 he began his 20-year long career in the United States Airforce. During his time in the Airforce, he rose to the rank of Sergeant. After retiring from the Airforce in 1995, Doug’s passion for cars led him to open Barnes and Sons Auto. After his success with this auto garage, he returned to civil service. After 10 years of service, he retired in 2013. A man of confidence, Doug identified himself by his work and service, whether it was the work on his lawn and garden at his Eufaula lake house, his service in the military, or volunteering with Habitat for Humanity. He was a passionate man who lived and loved fiercely and was known to never meet a stranger. Doug was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Edmond and enjoyed spending time with his beloved wife, children, stepchildren, and grandchildren. He was tragically killed when a drunk driver hit his car head on as he was driving with his wife to take his mother-in-law home following Christmas festivities.
